ABWE Ministry Annual Report -- 2003
George and Karen King
Muslim Ministries
A. Give a one or two sentence summary of your ministry assignment.
George--I am engaged in various aspects of outreach ministry to Muslims including internet evangelism, training of Christian workers, educating churches about Islam, and personal ministry to Muslims.
Karen-- I am primarily a wife and mother of 5, now ages 14-20 years old. I also teach immigrants in an easy-English Sunday School class, serve in AWANA, volunteer English teaching to immigrants, and show hospitality.
B. What special blessings/highlights did you experience in ministry during the past year?
George–1. $6000 gift for computer purchase from a supporting church.
2. "Al-Kitab" internet Bible correspondence school passed the 100 member mark.
3. "Al-Kitab" Muslim member from Singapore trusted in Christ as Saviour.
4. Expanded ministry through a second ministry website.
5. Inauguration of our online Muslim-friendly English Bible in October.
Karen–1. The opportunity to teach a simple-English adult Bible class to several new Chinese families in our church.
2. Volunteer work in teaching English to immigrants of various nationalities.
3. Received government certification to teach English as a foreign language (TOEFL).
4. Took literacy tutor training (Laubach certificate).
C. What difficulties did you encounter in ministry during the past year?
George–1. Continued shortfall in ministry funding and its effects on daily life.
2. Learning to find balance in various responsibilities and many in-process projects.
Karen–1. Leg injury and long healing and recovery time greatly reduced my physical mobility for months.
D. List up to 5 of your major ministry goals for the past year and rate your progress for each (accomplished, partially accomplished, little progress, no progress, dropped).
George–1. Take over and learn the operations of an additional website reaching Muslims. Accomplished
2. Prepare studies for publication including a book on the Prophets of the Bible and Islam. No Progress
3. Develop the family/ministry web site with more Islam Resources. Accomplished
4. Add the ability to accept financial support pledges and instant online donations to the family website. Accomplished
5. Learn basic Arabic for reading. Little Progress
Karen–1. Continue my friendship with the Turkish lady. Little Progress
2. Complete one more TESL course. Accomplished
3. Take adult literacy training locally. Accomplished
4. Begin to tutor immigrants in literacy. Accomplished
5. Have guests in our home at least twice a month. Partially Accomplished
6. Pray daily for my five children and husband. Accomplished
E. Describe activities that contributed to your progress, or reasons for lack of it for each item listed in D.
George--1. Accomplished through necessity to do so.
2. Lack of time.
3. Adapting previously researched material for the website made it possible.
4. Use of "Paypal" for online donations and ABWE's available online forms streamlined the process.
5. Too busy with other activities.
Karen–1. Birth of Turkish lady's second child made it more difficult to spend time together, as well as some other issues.
2. The prospect of receiving government certification to teach English as a foreign language gave motivation.
3. A local program was available with manageable time commitment.
4. I was contacted by the local literacy council about taking on a volunteer student.
5. Between my leg injury and necessary preparation time for my new class, this goal has been more difficult.
6. Daily discipline.
F. What changes/improvements could enhance your ministry?
George–1. Not having to concern ourselves with financial pressures. We could easily make use of $1000 per month extra funding.
2. Training in various aspects of website development.
Karen–1. More English students.
2. Acquire more ESL materials for private tutoring.
3. More confidence.
G. List at least 5 major goals for the coming year and 2 long term goals.
George–1. Develop a chat room or e-discussion group connected to our website ministry.
2. Prepare studies for publication including a book on the Prophets of the Bible and Islam.
3. Continue to develop the family/ministry web site with more Islam Resources.
4. Add an online Quran with Christian/Bible-based commentary to our Al-Kitab website.
5. Learn basic Arabic for reading.
Karen–1. Continue contant with various immigrant friends.
2. Complete the Firm Foundations curriculum with my Sunday School class.
3. Keep tutoring my present English/literacy student.
4. Be more involved in AWANA and reaching out to the moms of the unsaved clubbers in particular.
5. Continue ministry of prayer for family and others.
Long term goals.
George–1. Pursue and complete graduate studies in academic areas which will enhance ministry to Muslims worldwide.
2. Help our five children to transition to adult Canadian life as followers of Christ over the next up to 10 years.
Karen–1. Grow in godly wisdom, developing a great passion and love for God.
2. Help my children grow into responsible adults.
3. Become more involved in teaching English and adult literacy, using this as my platform for outreach to immigrants.
